The force that changes motion

By Physics you can picture · myAudience

Schematic horizontal-force examples for a 2 kg cart: 8 N right minus 2 N left gives 6 N net force and 3 m/s² acceleration right. A separate 6 N versus 6 N case has zero acceleration and may retain constant velocity. Arrow lengths are qualitative; vertical forces are omitted.

For constant mass, Newton’s second law is Fnet = ma. A 2 kg object accelerating at 3 m/s² needs a net force of 6 N. “Net” matters: add forces with their directions, including friction. If opposite forces balance, acceleration is zero; the object may still be moving at constant velocity. Our diagram is a simplified horizontal model, not a complete description of every force.
