What H2O actually tells you

By Chemistry in small pieces · myAudience

Two separate bent water-molecule models, each containing one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms: four hydrogen and two oxygen atoms in total, written 2H₂O. Colours, sizes and bond geometry are schematic conventions, not measured atom appearances.

myAudience original generated teaching illustration. · Original project illustration.

One water molecule contains two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. H₂O gives the ratio of atoms; it does not mean equal masses or that atoms are colored balls. Our model uses colors to distinguish elements and is not to scale. Compare two water molecules: together they contain four hydrogen atoms and two oxygen atoms. Models help us think, but their conventions need explaining.
