Higher: develop an argument in an original longer response

A longer response needs development, not merely more separate facts. This original two-bullet task asks you to explain how you use technology for learning, including benefits and limits; then describe a recent experience and consider how you would change your learning routine. The model uses a personal fictional voice, not an evidence-based claim about the effect of technology on all learners. An argument connects claim, example, limitation and proposed action. No score or grade is assigned to the model.

Before drafting, give each bullet a paragraph purpose. Paragraph one establishes a continuing habit and balanced opinion with an example. Paragraph two reports a specific event, interprets it and proposes a conditional improvement. Choose Higher structures because they express the needed relationships: seit with present for a continuing habit, weil with two verbs for a reason, hätte/würde for a hypothetical change. Complexity that confuses who did what is not an improvement. All temporal claims should be compatible: an activity described as completed should not become a current universal habit without further evidence.

Translation: For two years I have often been learning with my computer. I find that practical because I can find information quickly. At home I read short texts in German and write new words in a notebook. My brother prefers working with books. I understand his opinion because some texts on the internet are not correct. Therefore I do not read just one page. For me books and the computer are important, but I do not want to sit in front of the screen all evening. Last Saturday we studied German together. First we read a text about a garden. Afterwards my brother asked me questions. I could not explain everything, but his questions were helpful. If I had more time, I would read a short text every day. I would also work with my brother more often because we can learn a lot together. Tomorrow we will go into the library and look for a new book there.

Review the argument separately from the grammar. The model offers a benefit, a limitation and a way of checking information; it does not establish that reading multiple pages guarantees truth. Helpful is the narrator's assessment of one experience. The second paragraph moves from that event to a conditional routine and then an actual plan, so would and will must not be merged in translation. Check seit zwei Jahren, finden kann, hätte/würde and lernen können as distinct structures. The unfamiliar phrase vor dem Bildschirm belongs to the Higher preposition set; supporting vocabulary includes Bildschirm, screen; hilfreich, helpful; Heft, notebook. Every unexplained gap in the full vocabulary list remains open.

The three-card plate separates a reported past reading event, a desired library visit and an unanswered invitation. Both German text and translation are supplied. Use the words to support a claim; the imagined scenes cannot prove agreement, completion or reliability of a reported event. Original transfer challenge: Revise the model’s claim that reading more than one internet page checks information. Write a short Higher paragraph acknowledging a limitation and proposing a specific conditional improvement, with a faithful translation. Explain why copied versions of one article would not count as independent corroboration.

Reasoned model and indicative author criteria: Original model extension: Manche Seiten wiederholen dieselben Fehler. Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich den Autor und das Datum prüfen. Ich würde auch ein Buch benutzen, weil ich verschiedene Erklärungen vergleichen kann. — Some pages repeat the same mistakes. If I had more time, I would check the author and the date. I would also use a book because I can compare different explanations. Dieselben means the same, prüfen means check, and vergleichen means compare here; these supplied forms are contextual support, not a claim of list-controlled exam vocabulary. Mere page count cannot establish reliability, and books also need evaluation. Credit the limitation, conditional improvement, two-verb final kann and a reasoned distinction between repetition and independent evidence; this is not a mark prediction. This is not an official mark scheme or evidence of independently attempted mastery.

Worked example: Improve Ich mag Computer. Gestern gelernt. Mehr Zeit ich lesen by adding a benefit, a complete past event and a conditional change.

Give a concrete reason with a two-verb clause: weil ich Informationen finden kann.

Build a complete perfect sentence with habe … gelernt and specify the companion.

Use hätte in the fronted condition and würde … lesen in the main clause.

Answer: Ich finde den Computer praktisch, weil ich Informationen finden kann. Gestern habe ich mit meinem Bruder gelernt. Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich öfter lesen.

Check your understanding: 1 Identify one stated limitation in the model. 2 Translate Ich konnte nicht alles erklären without implying I explained nothing. 3 Rewrite the conditional as a definite tomorrow plan and explain the meaning change.

Answer: 1 Some internet texts are not correct; the writer also limits time at the screen. 2 I could not explain everything. 3 Morgen werde ich einen kurzen Text lesen. This asserts a future plan rather than a hypothetical activity dependent on extra time.

Why: Not everything leaves partial explanation possible. A conditional improvement and a definite plan have different commitment and time reference. Development consists of connected justified ideas; length alone does not establish sophistication or top-grade performance.
