Five visible statements without invented biography
A short description is an evidence task before it is a vocabulary display. In our original practice illustration, there are exactly two people in a park: one sits on a bench and the other stands beside one bicycle. Trees and a blue sky are visible. Write five short German sentences about what can actually be seen. This is a generated instructional scene, not an examination photograph or a record of a real event. The Foundation writing format asks for five short sentences; this lesson practises that format without predicting a mark or testing speech.
Choose five distinct observations instead of disguising one fact in five near-identical sentences. You can move from a whole-scene observation to the people, their positions and the background. A position is not automatically a movement: steht an einem Fahrrad describes standing by a bicycle, not cycling. The image cannot show whether the people are friends, their ages, where they were yesterday or why they are outside. It can show a blue sky, but that alone does not prove an exact temperature. Evidence-controlled language is more accurate than an impressive invented biography.
Full original model, five sentences: Im Bild sehe ich zwei Personen. Eine Person sitzt auf einer Bank. Die andere Person steht an einem Fahrrad. Im Hintergrund sind Bäume. Der Himmel ist blau. Faithful translation: In the picture I see two people. One person is sitting on a bench. The other person is standing by a bicycle. There are trees in the background. The sky is blue. These five statements deliberately avoid naming relationships or feelings. The last statement describes visible colour; it is not a forecast or a claim that the whole day has been sunny.
The grammar follows the meaning. Im Bild is one initial constituent, so sehe is the finite verb in second constituent position and ich follows it. Eine Person is singular, therefore sitzt and steht have singular agreement. Auf einer Bank is a location, so the feminine noun Bank takes dative einer in this phrase. An einem Fahrrad describes a location by a bicycle, not a destination towards it; Fahrrad is neuter, so this location phrase takes dative einem. Foundation grammar includes an, auf and in with the case selected by their use. In the final sentence blau is predicative after ist: it does not take the attributive ending needed in ein blauer Himmel. Do not insert a visible adjective ending simply because the noun has gender.
Compare plausible language with supported language. Die Freunde fahren Rad is not a faithful description here: friendship is unknown, and the second person is standing rather than riding. Die Personen sind glücklich also turns an interpretation of expressions into a fact. A safer repair is Die Personen sind im Park, though it contributes less detail than the model's two distinct positions. Likewise, Zwei Personen sitzt auf einer Bank combines a plural subject with a singular verb and also wrongly puts both people on the bench. A correction must fix meaning and agreement, not merely spelling.
Use the plate as a checkable scene, not as a sheet to memorise word for word. Point to the person on the bench for sitzt, to the stationary person and bicycle for steht an, and to the trees for Bäume. No diagram arrow represents a destination. If an alternative sentence says Die Bank ist im Park, it can be true but does not replace every person-based observation. Credit a different accurate formulation when its meaning is visible. These are author teaching criteria, not an official mark scheme, and they do not establish independent performance from reading a model.
Transfer task: Suppose a new illustration shows the first person standing by the bench while the second person sits on it; the bicycle, trees and sky are unchanged. Revise only the two position sentences and translate them. A reasoned answer is Eine Person steht an einer Bank. Die andere Person sitzt auf der Bank. — One person is standing by a bench. The other person is sitting on the bench. Der Bank is dative after location auf; an einer Bank is also dative because it locates the stationary person by the bench. The account must not retain the original seating claim simply because it was previously memorised.
Audit a response in two passes. First ask whether each sentence has a different visible referent and whether anything asserts an unseen relationship, motive or past event. Then check number, finite verb position, noun capitals and the forms required by the chosen phrases. If a learner lacks a word, a simpler supported sentence is preferable to inventing a fact to fit remembered vocabulary. This sample leaves the wider photo contexts, full prescribed vocabulary and independently attempted accuracy open. It supplies no listening, pronunciation or spoken-photo assessment evidence.
Worked example: Repair: Zwei Personen sitzt auf einer Bank. Beide fahren Rad.
Separate the two visible positions; only one person sits.
Use singular sitzt/steht after Eine Person.
Replace the unsupported cycling claim with the visible bicycle location.
Answer: Eine Person sitzt auf einer Bank. Die andere Person steht an einem Fahrrad.
Check your understanding: Why is Die Freunde sind sehr glücklich not a secure factual description? Supply two supported alternatives.
Answer: Friendship and happiness are not established by this scene. Im Bild sehe ich zwei Personen. Eine Person sitzt auf einer Bank.
Why: A grammatical sentence can still be an unsupported claim; accurate description needs both language and evidence.
