Whose thing? Keep the relationship attached

Original diagram brackets connect cuya to biblioteca and cuyas to puertas, distinguishing the antecedent from the following noun whose gender and number determine agreement.

Whose thing? Keep the relationship attached

A relative expression connects information to a noun already introduced. In an English sentence about a library whose doors are closed, the library and the doors are different grammatical participants. One is the antecedent; the other is the thing related to it. Spanish cuyo makes that distinction visible through agreement. Before choosing a form, identify both nouns. Asking only whether the first noun is masculine or feminine is the wrong test. The relation matters, but the ending agrees with the following noun, not with the antecedent.

Consider an original example: una biblioteca cuyas puertas se cerraron ayer. The antecedent biblioteca is feminine singular, but puertas is feminine plural, so cuyas is the required form. In un centro cuya biblioteca abre los sábados, the masculine singular centro does not require cuyo: biblioteca requires cuya. The four ordinary forms are cuyo, cuya, cuyos and cuyas. None takes an accent in this relative use. A learner can check the form by placing a pencil mark under the noun immediately following it and naming that noun's gender and number. This is a checking method, not a substitute for understanding the sentence.

The relationship need not mean that somebody legally owns an object. A project can have aims, an event can have consequences, and a proposal can have an author. In el proyecto cuyos objetivos discutimos, objetivos is related to proyecto. The construction expresses that link without inserting a second possessive. Do not write cuyo sus objetivos. Cuyo already performs the relational work. To decide whether the construction is suitable, reconstruct a simple phrase with de: los objetivos del proyecto. If the intended relation cannot be reconstructed clearly, reconsider the sentence rather than forcing whose into every English which clause.

Relative information can also narrow a reference or add information about an already identified reference. Compare los talleres cuyas puertas están abiertas reciben visitantes with el taller central, cuyas puertas están abiertas, recibe visitantes. In the first, the relative clause identifies which workshops receive visitors; it does not say all workshops do. In the second, the commas present additional information about an identified workshop. Punctuation is therefore part of meaning. A translation that inserts commas everywhere can change a selection into a claim about the whole group. Read the full sentence before deciding whether the added information identifies or supplements its antecedent.

Prepositions remain attached to the relationship they express. In la asociación con cuyos miembros hablamos, con belongs to hablamos con; miembros determines the masculine plural ending. Removing con would change how the verb connects to its complement. In el edificio por cuya entrada pasamos, por indicates the route and entrada determines feminine singular. Work backwards from the plain clause hablamos con los miembros or pasamos por la entrada. That reconstruction tests both the preposition and the agreement without requiring a word-for-word transfer from English.

Register matters as well as correctness. Cuyo is useful in concise formal writing, but a conversational alternative can be clearer: el centro que tiene una biblioteca nueva. Such a paraphrase can preserve the intended relation when the context allows it. It is not automatically equivalent in every sentence; changing a relation into a tener clause may make the expression more specific. In productive practice, learn to use cuyo accurately. In translation, select a natural construction that preserves the actual relation, rather than adding a formal word merely to display knowledge.

There is a useful boundary case. English can use which to refer to an entire preceding event: the workshop was cancelled, which disappointed the students. Do not automatically turn that into cuyo followed by a noun naming the disappointment. A straightforward original translation is se canceló el taller, lo que decepcionó a los estudiantes. Here lo que refers to what happened. By contrast, el taller cuya cancelación decepcionó a los estudiantes introduces cancelación as a noun related to taller and requires a complete surrounding sentence. The two constructions organise information differently. Identifying the antecedent prevents a mechanically elegant but structurally incomplete translation.

Worked example: combine un museo abre mañana and las salas del museo han sido renovadas into one sentence that identifies the museum without asserting that every museum opens tomorrow. Step 1: identify museo as antecedent and salas as the related noun. Step 2: use cuyas because salas is feminine plural. Step 3: make the relative clause identifying by keeping it without commas. Step 4: retain the plural verb within the relative clause and singular verb in the main clause. Answer: un museo cuyas salas han sido renovadas abre mañana. The construction attributes the renovated rooms to that museum; it does not turn rooms into the subject of abre.

Check your understanding: Starting from la biblioteca cuyos empleados ayudan a los visitantes, replace empleados with personal and retain the intended singular collective noun.

Answer: la biblioteca cuyo personal ayuda a los visitantes. Personal is masculine singular and takes cuyo; ayuda must also be singular here. Changing only the determiner would leave an inconsistent noun–verb relation. A complete repair checks the entire clause.
