One cloth, three rooms

By Home décor · myAudience

AI-generated fictional interior illustration: An indigo cloth draped across a pale oak bench with adjoining rooms visible. Not a photograph of a real home.

A favourite textile can help you discover where a colour belongs before you buy anything. Carry it from room to room rather than deciding immediately that it must become a cushion.

Lay the cloth across a bedroom bench, then over a dining chair, then beside the living-room sofa. Notice where its colour feels most at home. Indigo may look rich beside pale oak and surprisingly flat beside a particular grey; the actual light and materials make the decision.

Photograph each trial from an ordinary viewpoint. Keep the cloth away from cooking surfaces, heaters and routes where it might catch. This is a temporary experiment, not a reason to leave loose material somewhere inconvenient.

When you find the strongest pairing, choose the form that would be useful there. A bed throw, removable chair pad or framed textile might suit different fabrics. Check the fabric's condition and care requirements, and seek specialist advice before cutting or mounting something valuable or historic.

You may decide the cloth should remain a cloth, brought out occasionally rather than permanently installed. That is a good result too. The experiment gives you a clearer sense of your home's colours without requiring a coordinated purchase for every room.
